Powder Milk

I bought one of the cans of powdered milk "country cream" that I heard so much about.

This morning we did a taste test on it.

According to the directions on the back of the can:

I mixed up 2/3 cup of powder to 1 quart of chilled water. (normal drinking)

Then I mixed up 2 cups of water to 1 cup of powder. (this is for a heavy cream)

Then I mixed up 3/4 cup of powder to 1 quart of water from the LDS church powder milk. (normal drinking).

We then tasted the "normal drinking " Country Cream and it tasted like water with a hint of milk.

The LDS milk tasted much better. You could taste the milk.

Then we tasted the country cream "heavy cream" and it was pretty good. But this was mixed at a 1 part to 2 parts.

We both decided that the LDS milk was better. We even mixed the two Country Cream mixtures together and the LDS Powder was better. With 1- 2/3rds cup of Country Cream powder, it still did not taste as good as the 3/4 cup of LDS milk.

We had a 3rd powder milk that we were going to try, Nino - by Nestle, it contains Soy, so we excluded it from the line up. I also have powder milk substitute from Honeyville and Morning Moo's Substitute Milk, I did not test either of these as they both contain alot of crap. I have had the sealed tin can of Country Cream for about 6 months. The LDS powder that I used in my taste test is about 1 year old and has been sitting in my cupboard in a 1/2 gallon mason jar with a plastic lid on it. The Country Cream has been kept in a 60 degree storage room and the LDS has been in the warmer kitchen.

The price for the cans of Country Cream is 12.99 per can. The LDS milk is 35.00 for 25 lbs. which gives you about 5 cans.

The thing that I was most amazed at was the fact that the Oxy Absorber in the Country Cream can was totally USED up. It was hard as a brick. Just like the ones I leave out on the counter over night. When I open one of my home canned containers of milk, beans or what ever, the oxy absorber is still ply-able. Four days ago I opened a 1/2 gallon jar of dehydrated squash, got out what I needed and put the lid back on with the oxy absorber still ply-able and in the jar. To prove a point to my loving man this morning, I opened the squash jar back up and it had a little suction and the oxy absorber was still plyable. So this tells me that the oxy absorber in the Country Cream was left out too long and is doing no good inside the can!

My conclusion :
You get more product with the LDS milk, it cost less and taste better. If at all possible, don't depend on a company to "preserve" your food for you, its better to buy in bulk bags and can it yourself. This has me wondering about my other dehydrated foods that I bought already canned!

Thanks for the info. Makes me feel better the 4 cases of LDS canned powdered milk is not terrible tasting.

The Local LDS cannery near me does the powdered milk in #10 cans I have not opened one yet to sample though.

Oh yea and welcome back (I think) everyone had said you had left here.

Re: Powder Milk

I've used the powered milk (in a packet) by Carnation. Just remember to chill it overnight when you make it. If not, you will probably never drink powered milk again. Tastes horrible if not cold. Consistency and flavor is equal to skim milk.

A little story .....

If you have someone who says they will never drink powdered milk because (insert any reason here), do this. Slowly blend a powdered milk solution into the regular drinking milk. But of course, say nothing. Continue to blend until only powdered milk remains. This may take awhile as you don't want to get caught.

This was done to me by my mother many years ago. I said I couldn't drink the stuff as it tasted bad (teenager logic). Imagine my surprise when one day she told me I had been drinking it for the past 3 months. :wide-eyed-look

Re: Powder Milk

Good to hear, I've got a few cases of the LDS milk I canned over a year ago. I've been thinking about breaking one out just to learn how to use it and to use some as it is supposed to only have a 5-10 year shelf life.

Good to see you around, Ima...

My sister wanted to throw out many cans of powdered milk because it was 25 years old and she was pretty sure she would never use it. It was delicious!

BTW, a drop or two of vanilla extract does wonders for the flavor.

I've noticed the same thing with cans from two well known suppliers of LTS food. The oxygen absorbers being all used up didn't concern me that much, what did was the fact that not only were they all used up, but the cans had no vaccuum what so ever. I have a whole case of wheat gluten from honeyville and at least two cans of milk from from EE like that.

Imacannin, did you hear a "woosh" when you opened the can? If so they were probably OK.

We had a conversation with the members about this last time we visited the LDS.. One of the guys in our group is the investigative type and was researching the food..

The LDS has a procedure for testing long term storage of their cans. They have a fail rate. I will see if I can get those stats.. Also he had some of the food sent to a lab to check quality. It came back organic quality even though they do not advertise it that way. Ill find out what products he had tested.

I can't remember if it wooshed, I guess I should have listened. I bought the 50lb bag of wheat gluten, but canned it myself. I think the gluten should be canned with out an oxy absorber because it will make it go flat, correct me if I am wwwwwrrrrooo-ng .

We use a lot of the LDS milk in our normal cooking...in whole wheat bread, in Navajo Fry Bread, and in making homemade ricotta cheese among other things. We also use fresh milk for the homemade ricotta sometimes.

Funny, we haven't tried drinking it plain. Milk is always on sale for under $2 a gallon fresh.

Anyone can use LDS Distribution center. There is no sales tax and no shipping costs. I cant remember finding a place that has ever had a better price with shipping included.

No, the online portion is called the Distribution Center or Distribution Services. The places you go to in person are a whole nother deal. Those are typically Bishop Storehouses or Cannery and those typically are hit or miss. Some are open to the general public and some are not. The one in my area is only available to church members for example.

Most even if not officially open to the public will still take non member orders if you call up and are polite and explain your circumstances.

That is a form that you use when you go into the Store house / cannery. Different store houses have different rules. You have to call the one near you and see if they let walk-ins come in. The one in my area lets anyone come in and buy the bulk food. I have not ordered online.

To find a Home Storage Center (Cannery) use this site here.

LDS Home Storage Center

The most current pricing can be found on the actual order form located here.

Home Storage Center Order Form

I am going in a little over a week and will be getting Milk, Apples, Carrots, Macaroni and Onions all in #10 Cans. Of course I have to do the packing myself, but the pricing includes Cans, boxes, lids and oxygen absorber packets.

I should have that info on the storage and fail rates of LDS in a few days..

Around here its not that easy to get a cannery visit. You have to go with a member or someone who has already been and is in good standing with the members... I have been quite a few times. I really like the couple who run the cannery and they have taken a shine to me.. I have to give the LDS group at the cannery big props for being gracious, warm and very generous to me and our entire survival group.. They never push their faith on us and have been wonderful to work with..

Re: Powder Milk

Thank you for posting the Video's.

What she said is sooo true about the Morning Moo's milk ingredients and any other kind of powdered milk with "additives". Its loaded with crap. The other day, I was researching soy - lentils - peanut toxins and came up with a web site, ( I book marked it somewhere, but cant find it now) Talking about how Soy will not allow your body to absorb minerals. I don't know if you have tried to go shopping lately and read the labels, but almost everything has some kind of soy in it. Out of 10 kinds of tuna, they had one can that did not contain soy and it was almost twice the cost of the soy tuna. I remember the good old days when they would pack tuna in spring water, and that was it. Anyway, it made me think of how things are falling into place with TPTB's agenda on mass extermination of the population. Already, the soil is depleted of minerals, its hard to get them in your food, you take mineral supplements but then eat something with SOY in it and it prevents your mineral supplements from being absorbed. A body with no minerals is a sick body!

Anyway - SOY SUCKS!

LDS purchasine through the mail

I've purchased through this LDS site:

http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs...cg3=&cg4=&cg5=

You don't have to be LDS to buy.

The prices are reasonable and include shipping.

I'm also going to the local LDS site this week. You do not have to be LDS to buy from them, but this may be a local requirement. I'm near the DC / MD canning facility.
